When in 1976, Andrzejewski took part in Komitet Obrony Robotnika (Committee for the Defence of the Working Man, the first democratic opposition organisation in Poland), the secret police published a fake appeal he supposedly signed in which he demanded equal rights for sexual minorities. Andrzejewski left an unfinished novel about the homosexual Roman emperor Heliogabalus. Scorpio Rising (1963), with its imagery of motor-cycle gangs, the leather scene and homosexual sex, exemplifies this. Other films include Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954), Kustom Kar Kommandos (1965) and Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969).

In 1966 she moved permanently to Rome, where she worked on her Todesarten (Death Styles) cycle until her early death. During her life, only the first part, Malina (1973), was published. In 1973 Bachmann’s flat caught fire, the cause of which was never established, and she died as a result of the burns she received. Further parts of the Todesarten cycle, the novel fragment Der Fall Franza (The Franza Case) and Requiem für Fanny Goldmann (Requiem for Fanny Goldmann) appeared posthumously. The cycle navigates the themes of female identity and the difficulties and possibilities of female writing.
